PRODUCT APPLICATION
Scientists at the institute of oceanography of the Chinese academy of sciences used ZooSCAN's image scanning technology to estimate biomass
2020-01-09

ZooSCAN is mainly used for counting, size measurement, species identification and biomass determination of zooplankton samples in liquid.

ZooSCAN is composed of ZooSCAN, ZooProcess and Plankton Identifer (PkID), etc. ZooSCAN is the hardware part, mainly scanning zooplankton samples to form digital images. ZooProcess and PkID are parts of the software, which process the original images with standardized programs, automatically measure the morphological parameters of different individuals, and automatically classify and count the zooplankton in the images. Its basic workflow includes: 1) scanning the blank background; 2) scan the sample to obtain the original picture and metadata information; 3) standardized the original image through ZooProcess software, extracted and measured the morphological parameters of different individuals in the image; 4) establish image training database through PkID software and conduct performance verification; 5) for the scanned sample images, automatic identification of zooplankton was conducted to obtain the number of zooplankton in different groups; 6) the extraction and analysis of morphological parameters can further obtain the particle size composition, biological volume and other information of the sample.

Application: ecological investigation, fishery, aquaculture, education.

In recent years, researchers from the institute of oceanography of the Chinese academy of sciences have used ZooScan image scanning technology to establish the regression relationship between body length, area and volume and dry weight of the dominant zooplankton species in jiaozhou bay, daphnia chinensis and arrowworm. The differences between different seasons and different parameters were compared. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the regression relationships in different months, and among the three body size parameters, the area fitting degree of biomass was the best. The relation between body size and biomass of daphnia sinensis and sinew sinew can be expressed as :lgDW=1.61lgA+1.69,lgDW=1.54lgA+1.32.

The ZooSCAN has been comprehensively upgraded by the manufacturer. In view of the work needs, the institute of oceanography of the Chinese academy of sciences has again purchased a ZooSCAN zooplankton image scanning and analysis system, which has greatly enhanced the ability of the institute of oceanography to study the ecological environment of jiaozhou bay.
